Mandela Patrick has copped 54th place at the British Junior Open in the Boys under 17 category and his brother Nku will be c ompeting later this evening in the 49/50th playoff in the Boys under 15 category.
In speaking with Mandela, (who seemed to be in quite good spirits and enjoying the experience) he noted that his first match ended in defeat against the 3rd seed, Ahmed Al Saraj of Jordan - ranked 170 in the world professionally and Asian junior champion. His second match however was tied at 2 all versus Mathieu Grondin of France. It was a very close match. The Frenchman won the last game 11-7 with 2 volley nicks. Mandela's 3rd match was a 3-0 w/o and his final match was the 53/54th playoff against Yohann Pandole of India which ended 11/9 11/7 5/11 11/5 in Pandole's favour.
Nku Patrick lost his first match to 9/16 seed 3-1.
Mandela indicated that this was a very close match and that Nku had 2 game ball opportunities in the 4th game.
He then lost second match 3-0 but came out on top in the next match with a comfortable win against Leon Bowers of England 11/9 11/2 11/7.
Nku's next match will be the 49/50th playoff against 17/32 seed Hikal Nasir of Malaysia.
This evening, Jan 5th the players at the British Junior Open will be treated to an exhibition match between 2 squash legends and former world champions, Thierry Lincou vs Peter Nicol. The experience must be fantastic for Mandela & Nku and we wish them all the best in the Scottish Open starting Saturday.
