The 16th Senior CASA Championships started on Friday August 10th with the individuals for both men and women. The players had to complete the first and second rounds on Day 1 to facilitate the finals that are scheduled for Monday, August 13th.
The upsets began from the men’s first round matches with unseeded teenager, Bryant Cumberbatch (B’dos), defeating the #16 seed Ryan Abraham (T&T), by three games to one: 9/2, 7/9, 9/5, 9/0. The Jamaicans experienced a good day with 3 men advancing to the second round and two of those moving to the quarter-finals. In the women’s section, all five Jamaican women advanced to the second round and three of those moving on to quarter-finals with Anita Bicknell (#13) securing an upset of the #5 seed Jennifer Armstrong of Barbados. The top two seeds, Karen Meakins (B'dos) and Karen Anderson, from Jamaica also advanced without any fuss as did the #4 seed, 16-year old Cheri-Ann Parris and the #6 seed Lilianna White, both from Barbados. Jamaican, Tracy Binnie (#15 seed) also enjoyed an upset victory over the higher ranked Bo Harris (#7) of Barbados in straight games 9/6, 9/5, 10/9.
The major upset of the evening, however, was the sensational defeat of the men’s top seed, Patrick Foster (Bermuda) at the hands of Paul DeVerteuil the cool #9 seed from Trinidad and Tobago. This match saw the left handed Trinidadian deploying his volley drop shots to deadly effect to keep Foster on the move. The tactic worked because Foster was simply not mobile enough to cover these deftly played shots into the front of the court. The match was very physical, and at times contentious, but eventually DeVerteuil prevailed to secure the upset by three games to one: 6/9, 9/7, 9/5, 9/5.
Quarter-final matches start on Saturday, August 11, 2007 at 2 p.m. and the individuals will conclude the semifinals and finals on Sunday and Monday respectively. The full results are given below:
