TRINIDAD and Tobago’s sole professional squash player, Colin Ramasra will be returning home to play in the Digicel Trinidad and Tobago Open and Trinidad and Tobago National squash tournaments.
The Digicel Trinidad and Tobago Open will be played from May 22-25 while the Trinidad and Tobago Nationals is carded for June 11-14.
Currently, Ramasra is training in England for the two premier local tournaments and has expressed his intention to win both tournaments.
Josh Pinard is the defending Champion of the T & T Open, having won last year's final in a 5-game marathon against Gavin Cumberbatch (the 2007 Caribbean Mens Champion). He also defeated James Bentick of St. Vincent in the semi finals in another 5-game match.
This was the beginning of Josh's squash rampage last year, as he went on to win the Trinidad & Tobago National Championships with a 3-1 victory over Ryan Abraham in the final. And soon after that he continued his hot streak capturing the St. Lucia Open title defeating the tournament's #1 seed Mike Bull of England 3-2 in the semis and Steve Smith of Jamaica 3-1 in the Final.
En route to this hat-trick of titles he had also been training with both Junior and Senior National Teams concurrently for the Junior and Senior Caribbean Championships in July and August respectively.
The DIGICEL T & T SQUASH OPEN is commencing next week Thursday. The event will be run from Thursday 22nd May - Sunday 25th May.
This is our country's most prestigious squash event and the prize money for top positions (largest prize money out of Caribbean Opens) attracts top overseas players from all over the Caribbean.
Last year saw the reintroduction of the tournament after it had been omitted from the Calendar for a number of years. Due to last year's success, we expect this year's DIGICEL T & T Open to be even better with more overseas entries, more coverage, and a higher level of squash.
CHARLOTTE KNAGGS has been selected as the first recipient of the Ryan Abraham Scholar-Athlete Squash Challenge Trophy.
She beat three other athletes short-listed for the award sponsored by top squash player Ryan Abraham. The Form One student received it on Sunday at the Prize-Giving Ceremony of the Holiday Snacks Junior Nationals Squash championships.
